General Information on Appointments to Non-clinical Teaching Posts in Chinese University of Hong Kong

Appointment:
Appointments are normally made on fixed-term contract basis initially for up to 3 years, which may be extended or renewed subject to mutual agreement.

Upon completion of contract service normally for not more than 6 years, consideration may be given for continuation of service on regular terms.

Appointment level and salary:
The university adopts a five-level appointment system for non-clinical teachers, namely, assistant professor, associate professor, professor 2, professor 1 and professor (of a subject). The salary ranges applicable to the 5 levels as follows:

Retirement benefits
The normal retirement age is 60, but appointment may be extended beyond the normal age subject to approval of the university council.

Depending on the duration of the fixed-term contract and where applicable, an appointee will be entitled to university contribution to a retirement scheme plus a contract-end gratuity (totaling up to 15% of basic salary).

Housing benefits:
Under the staff housing assistance package 2005, eligible appointees are offered the following benefits (August 1, 2008) :

Prof of a subject or speciality and Prof 1 enjoy University accommodation or non-accountable housing cash allowance at HK$ 21600 per month.
Prof 2 enjoys university accommodation or non-accountable housing cash allowance at HK$ 16200 per month.
Associate prof enjoys non-accuntable housing cash allowance at HK $ 16200 per month.
Assistant prof enjoys (for those at a salary of at least HK$ 50475 per month) non-accountable housing cash allowance at HK$ 13000 per month.

Salary tax:
The maximum rate of salary tax in HK from 2004/05 onwards is 16% of gross annual salaries plus other allowances.
